Breath of City

HOW IS A CITY FELT LIKE BY ITS TOUCH AND BREATH…

I always have the weather information of the cities where my best friends and my family are. I can feel closer connections with them by comparing my city’s weather with theirs. However, numbers sometimes oversimplify the experience. They provide the information straightforward but too abstract.

The project is an installation design using real-time weather data from OpenWeatherMap and webcam photos. It is aimed to display the wind data in an exaggerated and overlooked dimension, a more visual and touchable way.

The air flow simulates the real-time wind. The wind direction can be clearly noticed by the waves on the canvas while the strength of it is consistent with the amplitude.

The city is represented by the real-time webcam photo with its name projected in the middle.

An alternative web-based prototype: Feed or Feed 2.0 (with Google Streetview). Simply type in the city name and the snow ball will simulate the direction and strength (speed) of the wind in real time.
